Trans Aid Cymru is a volunteer-led mutual aid organisation based in Wales, dedicated to supporting transgender, non-binary, and intersex (TIN) people. Founded in June 2020 (initially as the South Wales Trans and Nonbinary Mutual Aid), the group operates on the core principle of “solidarity, not charity,” focusing on meeting the material and social needs of the community through direct action and resource redistribution.

The organisation is for TIN people of all ages across Wales, with specific in-person meetups currently focused in Cardiff and Newport.

Key Services and Initiatives

  • Financial Grants: One of their primary functions is the redistribution of funds to help TIN people cover costs of living, medication, transport to appointments, or transition-related expenses. They typically distribute thousands of pounds in small grants every month.
  • Surgery Recovery Packs: They provide free, tailored recovery kits for those undergoing gender-affirming or sex-affirming surgeries. These can include items like specialised pillows, ice packs, post-op binders, and other recovery essentials.
  • Trans-Friendly GP Map: In partnership with other local advocates, they maintain a “GP Map of Wales” to help community members find doctors and practices that are known to be supportive and knowledgeable about trans healthcare.
  • Meal Share Scheme: A grassroots project connecting TIN people who need a meal with volunteers in their local area who have the time and resources to cook and deliver one.
  • Social Meetups: They host regular safe-space gatherings, including bi-weekly meetups in Cardiff (at Cathays Community Centre and Geek Retreat) and monthly sessions in Newport.
  • Advocacy & Education: While volunteer-led, they offer informal advice and remote advocacy (such as help with drafting letters for appointments). They are also a prominent voice in Welsh activism, frequently organising protests and marches for trans rights in Cardiff.

2026 Engagement

Trans Aid Cymru remains highly active in political advocacy. Following a significant march in Cardiff in April 2025 that drew over a thousand attendees, the group is continuing to lobby the Welsh Government for simplified gender recognition processes and better protections against conversion practices in 2026.
