The Regent Bar is Edinburgh’s LGBT+ and straight-friendly real ale pub, and we are proud to have been serving the city since 2003. Located at 2 Montrose Terrace in Abbeyhill, we sit in a warm, comfortable neighbourhood setting that feels like a proper pub rather than a nightclub. As the owners, we have built the Regent around a simple idea: a homely, welcoming space where real ales, comfy sofas, friendly staff and good conversation come together.
The Regent is known for its homely atmosphere, with comfy sofas, real ales and friendly staff. We serve great bar snacks and focus on quality over quantity, creating a space where people can relax and have a good time without noise or pressure.
Real ale and great drinks
We are famous locally for being a fantastic real ale pub, and the quality of our ales is recognised by CAMRA, who voted us Edinburgh Pub of the Year on two occasions. We have 14 taps, including 3 cask ales and a cask cider, with a large range of local and international lagers, ales and ciders available.
Deuchars IPA is always available, plus two guest ales and one real cider, Weston’s Old Rosie. We also serve wine, spirits, coffees, teas and soft drinks. Our bar focuses on quality drinks served well, with staff who know the products and take pride in what they pour.
Music and atmosphere
We play a huge range of background music in the bar. Guests may hear The Beatles, Frank Zappa, Abba or Dvorak, depending on the day and the mood. The music is chosen to enhance the atmosphere, not dominate it, making the Regent a place where conversation is easy and everyone can relax.
The Regent is more of a traditional pub and it is definitely easier to chat. The crowd is usually more beary, and we host a bear social on the second Saturday of each month. The atmosphere is warm, comfortable and unpretentious, with big comfy booths and quirky décor that make the space feel unique.
Food and bookings
We no longer serve food, but we do offer great bar snacks for guests who want something to eat with their drink. Our focus is on drinks and atmosphere, with a relaxed pub feel that works for locals and visitors alike.
We can reserve tables Mondays to Thursdays for up to 8 people maximum. We do not accept bookings on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. Just give us a call on 0131 661 8198 or send us a message on Facebook Messenger.
Opening times and access
We are open everyday from 4pm to 1am. This gives guests a reliable, accessible venue for both daytime and evening visits.
We have level access from the entrance to reception, level access to all public areas, level access to the bar and level access to the main entrance. The Regent is partially suitable for visitors with limited mobility, with level access throughout most of the venue.
Internet access is available via WiFi, and the pub is on the No. 35 bus route with public parking nearby. We accept cash, and we are a licensed bar with catering available.
