Rainbow Mind is a specialist mental health service “led by and for” the LGBTQIA+ community. It is a collaborative project between two local Mind branches—Mind in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest and Mind in Salford. Their mission is to tackle the specific mental health inequalities faced by LGBTQIA+ people, who are statistically twice as likely to experience chronic mental health issues than the general population.
The organisation is for LGBTQIA+ individuals (ages 18+) across Greater Manchester and London, as well as young people (ages 17–24) nationally through their online programming. Because the staff and therapists are themselves members of the community, they provide a space rooted in “shared lived experience,” removing the fear of being misunderstood or judged by healthcare providers.
By situating mental health within a broader societal context, Rainbow Mind doesn’t just treat symptoms; it validates the external pressures of being queer in the UK today.
