Rainbow Mind is a specialist mental health service “led by and for” the LGBTQIA+ community. It is a collaborative project between two local Mind branches—Mind in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest and Mind in Salford. Their mission is to tackle the specific mental health inequalities faced by LGBTQIA+ people, who are statistically twice as likely to experience chronic mental health issues than the general population.

The organisation is for LGBTQIA+ individuals (ages 18+) across Greater Manchester and London, as well as young people (ages 17–24) nationally through their online programming. Because the staff and therapists are themselves members of the community, they provide a space rooted in “shared lived experience,” removing the fear of being misunderstood or judged by healthcare providers.

Key Services and Initiatives

  • Radical Self-Care (RadSec): Their flagship 8-week course that combines mindfulness and compassion-focused approaches. It is designed to help individuals process “internalised shame” and the “legacy of non-acceptance” that often results from growing up in an anti-LGBTQ+ environment.
  • One-to-One Therapy: Offers 8 sessions of free, specialist counselling with LGBTQIA+ therapists. This is primarily available to residents of Hackney and Greater Manchester.
  • Move With Pride: Free physical wellbeing sessions (such as yoga, guided runs, and dance) held in East London, focusing on the link between physical movement and mental resilience.
  • Queer Connect: A national online drop-in space for young LGBTQIA+ people (18–30) to share, connect, and engage in creative exercises for wellbeing.
  • Intersectionality Focus: They run specialised programmes specifically for LGBTQIA+ People of Colour and have a Youth Advisory Committee to ensure their services evolve with the needs of the younger generation.

By situating mental health within a broader societal context, Rainbow Mind doesn’t just treat symptoms; it validates the external pressures of being queer in the UK today.
