Pride in STEM

Pride in STEM is a multi-award-nominated UK charity dedicated to showcasing and supporting LGBTQIA+ people in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Founded in 2016, the organisation works to “queer up science spaces and science up queer spaces,” aiming to ensure that LGBTQIA+ scientists, engineers, and researchers are visible, valued, and safe in their workplaces and across the globe.

The organisation is for everyone in the STEM community who identifies as LGBTQIA+, as well as their allies and the general public. They recognise that diversity is vital for innovation and that many LGBTQIA+ individuals still face significant barriers, such as workplace harassment or being advised to hide their identities to advance their careers.

One of their most well-known initiatives is “Out Thinkers,” a series of informal public talks where LGBTQIA+ researchers share their work alongside their personal journeys. Pride in STEM also spearheaded the International Day of LGBTQIA+ People in STEM, celebrated annually on November 18th, to celebrate the contributions of queer people in the field and raise awareness of the challenges they face.

In addition to visibility, the charity provides practical support through a Small Grants Scheme, which funds community-led projects that strengthen queer STEM networks across the UK. They also work at a systemic level, providing consultancy to universities and government bodies to improve diversity and inclusion policies. Whether through their “STEM for Queer Youth” outreach or their networking events for early-career researchers, Pride in STEM is building a world where science is truly for everyone.
