BLAQ UK is a grassroots, youth-led organisation dedicated to supporting Black Queer young people across the United Kingdom. Founded by activist Mwanso Mutale, it distinguishes itself as the UK’s first Black Queer organisation specifically led by and for young people (typically aged 18–26). The group was born out of a necessity for dedicated spaces where Black LGBTQ+ youth can find community, mutual support, and celebration of their intersectional identities without fear of erasure or discrimination.

The organisation focuses on “community care,” operating under the philosophy that support systems for marginalised groups should be built and managed by those within the community. During the pandemic, they became well-known for providing care packages and virtual spaces to combat isolation, and they have since expanded into hosting physical events, workshops, and advocacy projects.

Key Services and Initiatives

  • Community Spaces: Creating safe, joyful environments for Black Queer youth to socialise and connect. This includes their signature “BLAQOWEEN” events and regular social meet-ups.
  • Holistic Wellbeing: Providing peer-led support that addresses mental health, spiritual well-being, and “healing together.” They often partner with mental health charities like Mind and Student Minds to signpost specialised resources.
  • Advocacy & Education: Challenging harmful media narratives and state systems. They advocate for community-led safety initiatives and the preservation of Black Queer history and culture.
  • Creative Projects: Supporting BLAQ artists and creators through platforms that celebrate their stories and voices, ensuring their contributions to UK culture are recognised.
  • The BLAQ Equity Agenda: A strategic framework focusing on seven core goals, including Community Power, Holistic Health, and STEM innovation, to ensure a sustainable future for the next generation of Black Queer leaders.

Status Note: BLAQ UK operates as a grassroots collective and community-led group. Unlike some older organisations, it has intentionally remained a flexible, community-focused entity to avoid the structural barriers often associated with formal charity registration, ensuring it remains accessible and accountable to the young people it serves.
