Black Thrive is an organisation and partnership dedicated to tackling the inequalities that affect the mental health and wellbeing of Black people in the UK. Originally established in Lambeth, it has grown into a wider movement that brings together community members, local services, and government bodies to create a fairer system for everyone of African and Caribbean descent.
For the LGBTQ+ community, Black Thrive provides a vital space through its “Black Queer & Thriving” initiative. They recognise the unique challenges faced by Black LGBTQ+ individuals, who often experience the “double impact” of racism and homophobia or transphobia. By centring the lived experiences of these community members, the organisation works to ensure that mental health services are culturally appropriate, inclusive, and safe.
Their work involves a mix of peer support, advocacy, and community engagement. They offer projects like the Culturally Appropriate Peer Support & Advocacy (CAPSA) service, which helps individuals navigate the healthcare system with the support of someone who understands their background. They also host events and research projects to amplify the voices of Black LGBTQ+ people, ensuring their specific needs are heard by decision-makers.
Black Thrive is not a crisis service, but rather a collective focused on long-term systemic change and community empowerment. Whether through their online healing resources, community assemblies, or advocacy work, they aim to move the community from merely surviving to truly thriving in every aspect of life.
